Answers to Frequently asked NDIS Questions
1. What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s first nationwide scheme developed for the provision of individualised support for people with disability, their families, and carers. Those eligible for the NDIS are provided with a lifelong approach to support which is tailored to their individual needs throughout their life.
Through personalised funding, NDIS participants are provided the choice and control to access the support services which best suit their unique needs, goals, and aspirations.
To find out more about the NDIS and how it can help you, head to the NDIS website or click here.
2. Am I Eligible for the NDIS?
Eligibility for the NDIS is dependent on a number of factors. To be eligible, participants must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or
- Be a citizen with a Protected Special Category Visa
- Be Under the age of 65 when first accessing the scheme
- Have a permanent or significant disability
To find out more about your eligibility for the NDIS, visit the NDIS website or click here.
3. What type of support does the NDIS funding cover?
While the NDIS provides funding to support people living with a disability, not all types of supports you may require are funded under the NDIS. Some supports are funded by other areas of the government or existing public / community services.
Generally, the NDIS will fund reasonable and necessary supports that help eligible participants to live a good and healthy life. To find out more about what types of services the NDIS covers, head to the NDIS website or click here.

5. What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a category of NDIS support in which a person with disability is assisted to live as independently as possible within their own home. This can either be on their own or in shared accommodation and involves support with the day-to-day tasks of life.
NDIS participants receiving SIL supports are assisted to maintain their independence and to develop skills which help them to live the life they want.
At Elmur Community Services, we understand the importance of living independently in your own home. To assist you with this, we offer Supported Independent Living services to suit your individual needs and wishes.
6. How many people will I be living with?
Our shared living homes are designed to offer a comfortable and supportive living environment. Typically, homes are shared by three to five people.
Each person has their own bedroom with well-maintained common areas such as bathrooms and living rooms. You are supported to actively participate in how your home is run and to ensure your home life suits the lifestyle you want.
7. Do I have to move into an Elmur home to receive support?
While we offer support services within our Elmur homes, we also offer support services right from the comfort of your own home.
Our in-home services include Daily Living Support, Supported Independent Living and Community Nursing. [links to these services]

9. Can I bring my personal items with me if I move into an Elmur home?
Of course! We want your new home to feel as comfortable and homely as possible. We encourage you to bring any personal or sentimental items with you to make your space as unique as you are.
In shared living homes, your bedroom is your space to design and decorate to your tastes. Common areas, however, are shared spaces so you will be supported to design and decorate them collaboratively with your housemates.
